Artist Study: Dina Goldstein

                This is a picture of Belle from The Beauty and the Beast. She is lying on an operation table having plastic surgery done. There are doctors all around her making incisions and injecting things. Her dress is a pale yellow and the blanket over her is like a dark hazy blue.

                I think that life for this princess in the future would be difficult, because society’s description of beauty is not what it used to be.  What I think has happened to her is now she has because so obsessed with image that she has lost herself, in trying to please people and look like what they think she should look like. The photographer expressed this by putting her on an operation table and showing the doctors making changes to her face.

                I think the photo is kind of sad because I think it show how people have sort of lost their way because it shows her making drastic changes to her appearance. A lot of people do that, instead of just continuing to do the things they used to believe in like not caring about how people think you look, or standing out by just being you. It’s almost like a lot of people have just lost their sense of individuality. At the same time the picture is a bit ironic because when you get plastic surgeries done they tell you,” once you get this done you’ll be prettier than the rest and you’ll stand out” when really it doesn’t do that you just look like all the other people with plastic surgery.  So it kind of pokes fun at conformity because the people who get surgeries like that are conforming to an extreme, and saying ,”if you don’t want to conform and look like everyone else, then do what we do and act like us and you won’t”.

This is a picture of Rapunzel in a hospital room with an IV in her arm. She is bald and is holding her hair in her lap. The expression on her face is very depressed which matches the emotion in the room because she’s all alone.

                From the looks of the picture I would guess that she has cancer, so I suppose life for her in the future would be very challenging, as well as depressing. To hint at that she got cancer, the photographer put her in a hospital room with an IV and made her bald, as well as look sad while she is holding her hair.

                My opinion of this photo is that it’s very sad because cancer is a tough thing to go through and it has killed a lot of people. Another thing that this image makes me think about is that the photographer is trying to say that cancer can happen to anyone even people who live lives like fairytale. Both of the pictures I examined make me think that with the way the world is today it’s not possible to live like in the fairytale without going through a lot of tough obstacles and choices, and as the same time you are doing that trying not to lose yourself.
