Artist Study: Dina Goldstein

This is a picture of Belle from The Beauty and the Beast. She is lying on an operation table having plastic surgery done. There are doctors all around her making incisions and injecting things. Her dress is a pale yellow and the blanket over her is like a dark hazy blue.
I think that life for this princess in the future would be difficult, because society’s description of beauty is not what it used to be.  What I think has happened to her is now she has because so obsessed with image that she has lost herself, in trying to please people and look like what they think she should look like. The photographer expressed this by putting her on an operation table and showing the doctors making changes to her face.
I think the photo is kind of sad because I think it show how people have sort of lost their way because it shows her making drastic changes to her appearance. A lot of people do that, instead of just continuing to do the things they used to believe in like not caring about how people think you look, or standing out by just being you. It’s almost like a lot of people have just lost their sense of individuality. At the same time the picture is a bit ironic because when you get plastic surgeries done they tell you,” once you get this done you’ll be prettier than the rest and you’ll stand out” when really it doesn’t do that you just look like all the other people with plastic surgery.  So it kind of pokes fun at conformity because the people who get surgeries like that are conforming to an extreme, and saying ,”if you don’t want to conform and look like everyone else, then do what we do and act like us and you won’t”.
This is a picture of Rapunzel in a hospital room with an IV in her arm. She is bald and is holding her hair in her lap. The expression on her face is very depressed which matches the emotion in the room because she’s all alone.
From the looks of the picture I would guess that she has cancer, so I suppose life for her in the future would be very challenging, as well as depressing. To hint at that she got cancer, the photographer put her in a hospital room with an IV and made her bald, as well as look sad while she is holding her hair.
My opinion of this photo is that it’s very sad because cancer is a tough thing to go through and it has killed a lot of people. Another thing that this image makes me think about is that the photographer is trying to say that cancer can happen to anyone even people who live lives like fairytale. Both of the pictures I examined make me think that with the way the world is today it’s not possible to live like in the fairytale without going through a lot of tough obstacles and choices, and as the same time you are doing that trying not to lose yourself.

Anti Ad

I used an ad for Jack Daniels to base my anti ad off of, when I saw the ad I thought that in a way the company was trying to say that if you drink responsibly the negative effects of alcohol won't happen to you. When you say to people you should drink responsibly that doesn't exactly mean they will start drinking less, they might still drink a lot just in a way they think is more responsibly. So for my anti ad I found a picture of what your liver would look like if you drink too much too often or in other words not "responsibly".

Merchants of Cool

List 3 things you learned or that surprised you:
One of the things that I found surprising was that corporations went through all that trouble just to sell young people things.
Things such as hiring people to study us as a culture and find out what we want, then marketing that want to make money.
I found all of the videos interesting in the fact that it’s like the teens in society control the market and do not even realize it.
"So you can give them what you want them to have" (MTV Machine, 9:40) Mark                        Crispin-Miller, Communications Professor @ NYU

I think it means that the reason they do all the research is so that they can sell us the things we want and make lots of money.  It also tells you about what they want us to buy because it’s not everything that has to do with teen culture its one parts of it, the “cool” parts.
Makers of teen TV argue that they’re only reflecting the real world; media is just a mirror."  (The Giant Feedback Loop, 6:50)
The makers of teen TV are claiming that the things that show on their programs are greatly exaggerated stories or unreal extremes of teen mind sets and daily life but simply documentaries of them. So what that means is the teens in America really act as absurdly in real life as we depicted on TV. I can not agree with that statement, I can not really believe that that is how a majority of teens conduct themselves on a daily basis.

Looking at Ads

In this advertisement for Dawn dish soap the company uses Pathos, to guilt consumers into buying their soap in order to help save the animals that were harmed by the BP oil spill.
This is an ad for Sprint, the company uses logos to tell consumers that although some cell phone companies advertise that if you pay a certain amount of money your Internet is unlimited and will always be fast, When in actuality it wont. This ad depicts four cell phone companies Sprint(yellow), Verizon(red), T-Mobile(pink), and AT&T(blue). In this ad Sprint says that the companies stick to their word for awhile but the more and more you use the Internet on your phone they either cut you off completely or slow down the speed of your Internet, and by saying the other companies do that and that they do not it makes Sprint look like the obvious smart choice in sell phone providers.

This picture from a Clorox commercial uses Ethos to establish credibility with consumers by comparing a sock that been washed with Clorox bleach with one that has been washed in “the leading competitors” bleach.
